Admissions Officer Insight: Get to Know Carleton College

As an Admissions Counselor at Carleton College and an alumna, class of 2014, Holly Buttrey knows Carleton College better than almost anyone. Located in Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton offers many “favorite things” with its small town charm and big city opportunity nearby in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Holly’s list of favorite things will help you determine if Carleton is a good fit for you!

I assume you are all familiar with Maria’s long, melodic list of favorite things in The Sound of Music, but perhaps you know a little less about Carleton. Now, I am not much of a singer, but I can, however, share my favorite things about Carleton:

  • Chocolate chip cookies at 1 a.m. (or any time for that matter)
  • Wooden Adirondack chairs
  • Warm woollen mittens (just like Maria!)
  • Friedrich von Schiller
  • Farm House
  • Cheesy Sayles quesadillas
  • Acapella concerts
  • The Arb
  • Studying in Goodbye Blue Monday
  • Rugby championships
  • The smell of Malt-O-Meal cereal welcoming you into town
  • Knowing your friends’ favorite tables in the Libe
  • Ultimate
  • The Weitz Center cinema
  • Traying down Bell Field Hill
  • Late Night Breakfast
  • Ebony II Performances
  • All of our winters eventually melt into spring
  • Veggie sausages in the LDC
  • Science Fiction/Science Fantasy House
  • Meeting a new friend who’s just as weird as you
  • Late Night Trivia each winter term
  • Professors who quickly become parents, grandparents, and the older sibling you always wanted
  • The Bald Spot, especially playing broomball in the winter against our president, Stevie P
  • The safe, warm, welcoming community that keeps our hearts and souls toasty all year long
  • Defeat of Jesse James Days
  • Passionate peers
  • Studying abroad three separate times in three different countries
  • Intramural sports with your floor
  • Late night observation hours at the telescopes
  • Tables on the lower level of Sayles
  • Silent Dance Party
  • Staying up late with new friends to watch meteor showers
  • Office hours, especially that one professor who holds late night office hours over Skype so you can stay in your pajamas
  • 6:30 a.m. at the Rec when you have it all to yourself

Everyone has their own image of Carleton and their own list of favorite things, and honestly all experiences will be unique. There is, however, one thing we can all agree on; it’s the people that make this place so sensational! Every single person is an important piece to our community.

So to whittle down this long list I could simply say that my favorite thing about being part of the Carleton College community is the fact that I get to share this experience with so many other incredible people.
