One of the unique awards offered through the College Prep Scholars Program is telementoring with Amherst College students. But what is it exactly? And how can it help you get into college?
To give you a better idea of what telementoring looks like, we spoke with Karli Cecil, a 2015 College Prep Scholar and telementoring award recipient:
Q: In your own words, how would you describe what telementoring is?
A: Telementoring is the opportunity to get help with applying to college through QuestBridge from somebody who has recently gone through the same experience. For me, telementoring is having someone to help you who understands exactly what you are going through. None of my friends are in my situation (first generation, low-income) and having someone to help me go through the college application process that understands the extra challenges that it poses to students like me was incredible.
Q: What was your telementoring experience like?
A: I don’t think I could have had a better telementoring experience. My telementor is truly amazing. She not only helped me with my applications, but is one of my closest friends. We talked on the phone a lot during the application process so she could explain some things about my application that could be improved. She has even come to my house a few times so we could hang out as friends instead of just working.
Q: What was the most helpful conversation, piece of advice, or feedback your telementor gave you? Why was it so helpful?
A: The biggest difference that my telementor made in my application was the feedback she gave on my essays. Going into the application process, I was really concerned about my essays and nervous that they were going to bring down the quality of my application. My telementor assured me that I was fine. In fact, she really liked my essays! Of course, they weren’t perfect, so she helped me make adjustments to them that really elevated my application as a whole.
Q: Where will you be attending college next year? Did telementoring help you get there? If so, how?
A: With the help of my telementor I was fortunate enough to be matched to Yale University and I couldn’t be more excited! My telementor was a huge help in getting to Yale. She read every single essay that I wrote and helped me to polish them so they were ready to send in. She also made me feel more confident as an applicant by pointing out the positive aspects of my application.
Q: Anything else you want to share about telementoring?
A: Telementoring can really be a life-changing experience, but only if you use it. If you are fortunate enough to receive a telementor, please use the opportunity to its fullest.
