Our Top 10 Tips for Academic Success

strategy-iconThe QSN theme for October is Academic Success — just in time for upcoming midterm exams for QuestBridge Scholars! Late nights and last-minute cram sessions may seem inevitable in college; but if you figure out the study techniques that work for you, then you can minimize these as much as possible.

We asked QuestBridge Staff and Quest Liaisons for their best study tips, and here are the top 10…

  1. Take advantage of office hours — every professor has time set aside to directly help their students with the class.
  2. Don’t study in your bedroom — separate work and home! This is also a good way to find new spots on campus.
  3. Look out for free tutoring on campus, or meet with someone through your academic resource center. Take advantage of all the resources your school has to help you succeed!
  4. Study while eating breakfast. Not only do you fully wake up, but you multitask by eating and studying at the same time!
  5. Create your own outline of a lecture before class so you can take notes directly on your outline. You can use the lecture slides if they are available beforehand, or base it off of the course syllabus.
  6. Break it into manageable shifts. Take a breather every now and again to take your mind off work.
  7. Do a little work on Fridays and Saturdays. As unpleasant as it may sound, this can help alleviate some of the stress throughout the week.
  8. Explain the material you are studying to others — sometimes this is the best way to learn it yourself.
  9. Join and create study groups with classmates to share notes, prepare for tests, and review course materials.
  10. Don’t procrastinate!
