A Look Back on 2016 Match Stories…

As 2016 comes to a close, we want to take a look back on some of the great moments from the 2016 National College Match. This year, 5,338 high school seniors were selected Finalists, and 767 students were matched to our college partners — both record numbers that are definitely worth celebrating! But the individual stories of each student are truly what make 2016 a great year for us. Check out some of the reactions from our recently matched students:

“When I was matched I was speechless. I felt as if a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders for the next four years of my academic career. I stared at my phone in disbelief, but also in confidence because I knew that this was my prize for all the hard work and dedication I put in during these four years of high school.”

“Matching to Duke was undoubtedly the happiest moment of my life. I opened the notification in the middle of class and broke into tears of joy. I started hugging my friends and jumping up and down like a child. Finally, I ran out of class and took a much-needed victory lap around the school.”

“For months I had been preparing for December 1, mainly getting ready to deal with disappointment. Getting matched was a tantalizing possibility, but I was doubtful of my chances. […] So when I saw the notification that said “Congratulations!” and then the words “Yale University,” I just wasn’t ready for that shock of joy. I had just gotten home from school and I rushed into the house where my little sister was. I couldn’t talk, so I just hugged her and she said that I was shaking all over and looked terrified. I finally got the words out: “I got into Yale!” For the next week, every time I spoke those words it felt surreal.”

“I remember I was in my college counselor’s office, because her office is my comfort zone. […] The suspense in opening the update to my application was killing me. When I opened it, I didn’t even wait to see where I had gotten matched. I saw “Congratulations,” then I immediately jumped out of my seat, ran into the hallway, yelled out that I’d gotten matched, and fainted. The counselor was like, “You don’t even know where,” so I responded, “It doesn’t matter” because I knew that every college on my list was where I wanted to go. I felt relieved, comfortable, and happy knowing that my hard work in school finally paid off.”

“Let me paint the scene for you. I was sitting in my IB Calculus class and we were all in the heat of solving a differential equation by use of partial fractions. Suddenly, the room is quiet, and through my headphones I hear the sudden, heart-wrangling ding of my e-mail. No one notices but me. It read something along the lines of “Your application status for QuestBridge has been updated.” I sat staring at the link for a good 2-3 minutes just hovering over it with my cursor. “Just wait until you get home so you can cry in solitude with ice cream if necessary.” My impatience got the best of me and I clicked on the link. There it was: the next four years of my life laid out in front of me.”
